Half flemish Belgian and half jewish Moroccan, I lived in New York in the 70’s. I had the privilege of celebrating the bicentennial at Windows of the World and worked at the time as a registered New York City guide bringing visitors all the way up the observatory deck at least twice a week.

Ever since, I have considered myself a New Yorker, not only because New York as always felt home. But also because it is the one place in the world where someone with a flourishing multicultural background will share the same sidewalk wherever I walk in the city.

On 9/11, 2,500 miles away I was watching the morning news, and like millions in the world I lived it live. There is no one I knew that passed away or was hurt in that day. I remember the very unique grief I experimented far away from the city that I still call home, I wished I had been there in the Upper West Side with those friends I call family, and close to those who were directly touched.

Being a Visual Story Teller. It took me 21 years to finally finish a project remembering that world tragedy. I prepared a 20 pictures series named “From Grief to Freedom”, the first picture taken as a slide from the Staten Island Ferry in 1978 being the introduction and ending with the one named 2018. In between are 18 pictures taken in 2015 ad in 2018 manipulated in such a way that they all mirror each other. My way of honoring the twin towers with twin pictures.

In 2001 when it all happened my therapy at the time was musical. I chose 18 pieces of various authors of classical music from my CD collection, and built a requiem mass that goes historically speaking from the Invitatorium with Gregorian chant to Faure’s Paradisium passing by Verdi, Preismer and many others. 18 pieces of Music for 18 pictures. I shared it at the time and here it is again. You may click on the Spotify link at the beginning of the exhibit. It takes about 1 hour 13 minutes to listen to the 18 tracks. You may also see one with one picture at the time and listen to the specific track that goes with it. There is no specific discourse about why this picture shares this track. The order of the photographs is more visual.

Hoping this exhibit may transmit you my love of the Big Apple and my condolences to all those who lost a loved one, because even though grief settles in such a way that one can go on living, grief from tragedies stays alive for a live time.

Desde entonces, me he considerado un neoyorquino, no solo porque Nueva York siempre ha sido un hogar y una familia, sino también porque es el único lugar en el mundo donde alguien multicultural como yo comparte la misma acera donde quiera que camine en la ciudad.

El 11 de septiembre 2001, a 2.500 millas de distancia, estaba viendo las noticias de la mañana, y como millones en el mundo, lo viví en vivo. No conozco a nadie que haya fallecido o haya resultado herido ese día. Recuerdo el dolor particular que experimenté lejos de la ciudad a la que todavía llamo “casa”, con los que me rodeaban sin entender exactamente por lo que me estaba pasando. Deseé haber estado allí en el Upper West Side con esos amigos a los que llamo familia, y cerca de aquellos que fueron tocados directamente.

Soy un cuenta cuentos visual. Me tomó 21 años para terminar finalmente un proyecto recordando esa tragedia mundial. Preparé una exposición de 20 imágenes llamada "Del dolor a la libertad", siendo la primera imagen tomada como una diapositiva desde el ferry de Staten Island en 1978, esa es la introducción y finalizando con la foto llamada 2018. En el medio de ellas dos hay 18 imágenes tomadas en 2015 y en 2018 manipuladas de tal manera que todas se reflejan entre sí. Mi manera de honrar las torres gemelas con fotografías gemelas.

Espero que esta exposición te transmite mi amor por la Gran Manzana y mi pésame a todos aquellos que perdieron a un ser querido, porque aunque el dolor se asiente de tal manera que uno pueda seguir viviendo, el dolor de las tragedias se mantiene vivo por toda la vida.
